pay rate for content writers

what would you say is average pay rate for freelance content/article writers? I have friend that pays $10 per article to his writers but to me that seems very steep.

Not when you consider that a decent article takes a couple of weeks to a month in order to do the research, find the underlying story and then write it up professionally. I'd only call $10 per article mildly steep.

Well I hate to blow my own trumpet here but if you were offer us $10.00 for some written content all you're going to get is laughed at.

Our very bare bones minimum is $20.00 and that's only going to get you around 600 words. If you think that's too much to pay I can tell you that my partner and I have more than enough work on to keep us busy every day, seven days a week.

If you want quality then be prepared to pay for it - if you want garbage go find a monkey and pay him in peanuts.

I work for $30 a page for a full page (12 pt. font, single space).

About 550-600 words.

I've had no problem finding work and projects. Quality and experience sells.

$10 a page would be far less than minimum wage after taxes and time.

All depends, now doesn't it?

If you want search engine fodder or light materiel I would say that it is indeed steep. If you are looking for thesis type work I would say it's way on the low side.

The place I deal with sells 400 - 600 page articles for 5 bucks. Cheaper when bought in bulk.

So it's all a matter of perspective now, isn't it?

you can find writers charging $5 per article on elance, just depends where the writers are based, quality and your patience.

Boy, I had my sarcasm dialed up to 11 when I posted my first response, but I guess I was wrong. Maybe you CAN get articles for less than $10.

BTW the U.S. National Writers Union recommends a pay scale of $1 a word, and supplies a long list of magazines that pay this rate.

It depends what we are talking about here.

If we are talking about sub par content for article submission and content filling, 500 words for $5-$25 is the norm.

Should you be referring to higher level print quality content, that my friend will run you 50 cents per word on up.

$10.00 is to low, Imho pay 25 for one good high quality relevant article, if it is good people will naturally link to it.

I've been considering doing this for a while on some projects.

Are all these rates based on completely unique articles where the writer can't sell them ever again? Or is this for exclusive rights for 90 days?

Is there a price difference between these two options?
