Roughly how much information/pages/words/pictures should I have up on a site in order to start recieving competitive rankings for an "educational toys" website?

Is the ammount of content important or is it area of focus specific?

Hey Vegas bright,

I got the answer months ago: Here are my tips:
Begin With.....
Build a spider chart starting with 'educational toys' then draw two lines from the phrase and write down what comes to mind when you think of this phrase. Write those down, then draw lines from those words/phrases etc. Do this until you have over 100 phrases or words. Once you have done this effectively then you have related topics for your articles.

Next
1. Try to get at least 100-200 pages of good quality content on your website, thats right write it, it took me a while but Ive done it.
2. Each page should be at least 600-800 words. With a topic and subtobic both containing the keyword or keyword phrase your are writing about.
3. The keyword density should be at least 6-7% that is how many times the phrase 'educational toys' is used in the article.
4. Ensure that the spelling is correct on each page as you go along.

These are the rules I live by as I write my articles.

Maybe a moderator can shed some light to assist you even more.

I recommend posting new content on a consistent basis so they search engine spiders have a reason to visit your site more frequently. Blogs are a great way to add content easily.

Upload at least one article daily while you're waiting for search engine traffic. They'll start crawling every day. Also, on the index page, I have a link to the latest article, so that shows that there is a daily change on the entry page. I can only assume that the search engines like that. Blogs are definitely great - throw up a blog, add a para each day and link it back to an internal article - it will often go to the number 1 spot on G for those keywords ahead of your actual articles.

If this is an ecommerce site, it seems to me that having hundreds of pages of wordy content is going to annoy your users. Keywords... Yes, but keep your site clean and clutter free. The users who find your site will leave after a couple clicks if they have to wade through a bunch of muck just to find a talking globe for their kid.

IMHO, rebecky has a point. You might look at what the previous posters said and when you read the word "content" or "article," think of it as a good, concise, useful description/review of the product. Would have somewhat different slants depending on whether you're targeting parents or teachers.

Not that you couldn't have a part of your site where you have other articles or a blog that tie into the subject - something to make your site a place where people go for information, and especially to make them see you as someone whose descriptions/reviews of products they can trust.
