Using content from other sites

Do you do it? How often?

I'm gathering some content for my new site. I'll create a large part of it myself, but I'm also planning to ask some webmasters for reprint permission.

What's your experience with using other people's content? Are there any significant downsides of this approach?

one of the major downsides of this is that your content is duplicate to somones elses.

this could mean that your duplicate page would probably not show up in the se's because of this.

All i can say is make sure you get permission to do this before you take it. I am in the middle of a battle with an introducer of ours that copied 1 site and another load of pages from another site of ours, without permission.
Solicitors are involved, so again, get permission first.
