There's already plenty of content for my topic

I've been reading here that you should write what you know about and what you enjoy. The problem is, my topic is literally flooded with good content. Almost every aspect of it has been covered in detail, a large proportion of it by very authorative sites.

There are one or two other topic areas I could choose but they're VERY specialist. Only one adwords advertiser has bid on the keywords, overture shows dismal searches for the key terms and I havn't been able to find any affiliate programs that I could tie into a site based on that topic.

so what do I write about? Is it just a case of learning something new and going from there?

The answer might depend on your goals.

Do you:

1: Want to build a site full of useful information?

2: Primarily want to build a site make money.

3: Some combination of 1 & 2?

Is it possible to try and find the angles - the issues and/or perspectives not yet being addressed in any or sufficient detail? Are there any new or impending developments, just under the radar, that could be tomorrow's big subject matter and on which you could lead?

The sites really are comprehensive. The top 5 on google have covered almost every aspect I can think of, what's left isn't enough to build a full site with.

If the topic isn't TOO specific (for purposes of TOS here) maybe you could tell us what it is.
Some here might suggest new angles that aren't immediately obvious. -Larry

I'd say that if it's that competitive, you'd be better off trying to find another topic.

On the other hand, finding a new angle or innovative way to present the idea may work. Think about the "social" side of the topic (if it exists) where visitors vote, provide, or otherwise moderate content.

Maybe try taking a highly opinionated stance on the issue. Taking a controversial or even ridiculous side and arguing it might do really well. Maybe a parody site or site geared towards providing a humerus look at the industry.

There are always new ways to cover the same content... have people stopped writing poetry, or thrillers, or romance novels? If the area is truly saturated by fantastic sites, of course, you may have an uphill battle.

Nevertheless, try to come up with an innovative take on the topic...
- How about a blog, combined with static articles?
- How about a controversial take that challenges the status quo? If everyone says widgets are great, and blue widgets are the future, make a case for red widgets...
- Consider the community approach to content, i.e., a forum or other interactive technology.

thanks to everyone for their input on this thread. some good suggestions there but I you'd need to be an industry guru to pull it off properly. I'm knowledgeable enough to write about the topic (it's tech related) but I'm no guru.

I think I'll look for another topic, something more straight forward. I may come back to the tech topic once I have a little experience
