A software download sell page is a page or set of pages that is designed to highlight the software that a website is offering for download with a goal of getting users to download the software.

I am in the process of trying to write copy for several pages on our site which promote the software that we are offering to our users. I would like to know what makes a good sell page for software.

Some of the things that I am trying to figure out are:

How detailed should a sell page get: should it just include the highlights, some details, or a lot of details?

How important are images: do you need an image for each step you want to highlight or can users understand a point with just one image? For instance if you are talking about drag and drop functionality, do you need to show both steps as an image?

What makes a good sell page: is it just a set of product highlights with corresponding images, or is it an overview of the software, or is it both?

Are there any good reference sites for writing this type of copy? Can someone point me to good examples of software download sell pages?

I would appreciate any help on this subject.

I have written a couple of these, and while I wouldn't call myself an expert, here are some things that have worked:

- yes, keep it simple, and use selcted screenshots to get the idea accross (don't even think about using two screenshots to show drag n drop functionality).

- keep the language non-technical where possible: you qwon't alienate experienced users by caling a GUI an "easy to use programme screen" (or something - I don't have my writer's head on today), but you may alienate inexperienced users by using the former term.

- I use one or two paras of introductory sell text, then a features list and screen shots if applicable, then some more technical stuff (if it weren't for SEO considerations I'd probably put the technical stuff on a different page). Really detailed stuff goes on another page anyway. So the answer to you question is probably both.
