I want to use my own camera to take pictures of some items that are in a magazine. Then alter the images slightly and sell the items on my site. I will be ordering from this magazine if the items sell. Is this copyright infringement?

Yes. Copyright includes protection for derivative works, taking a picture of a picture is a derivative work.
