Im currently making my first site with a couple of friends. We would like to do some news-type things. Am I going to have to pay to use logos of other compnaies for illustrations or are most companies happy to get free advertsing. We are really low on funds so is this sort of thing something to steer well clear from?

It's always wise to ask permission and to clearly state your intent. What you don't want is them finding you. If they say no, then find a work around.
