How to go about it

Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster.

I am currently rebuilding my site which is a site that is all about views and opinions and I'd like to create an Editorial Policy to not only live or die by as a writer/Editor but also to make public what we are, who we are, what we do and don't do and our aims as I get lots of e-mails asking me all kinds.

However, I've never created one before and I'm at a loss as to how I go about it. How to structure it, what I need in there and such.

Any ideas, advice, hints or tips?

I've tried Google and looking at other sites but they are either very vague or unrelated to my type of site and I really want to provide a detailed, comprehensive Editorial Policy.

Thanks in advance.

Just briefly - as I'm off out in a mo...

Your'e talking about a "Mission Statement" of sorts?

How would you describe what the site is all about to a stranger who expressed an interest?

How would you describe how the site goes about doing what you've just described to the stranger?

Therein lies the foundation of any editorial policy (as opposed to editorial guidelines, which is a different matter all together...).

In my view, the words to express that which your project is about can only come from you. So, make up your own policies.

If you want a dry text about mission statements, editorial submissions & guidelines, then that's down to you; but it will come across as dull - and your project is not meant to be that...

If it's solely edit guidelines that you want, try the BBC, or the New Scientist, or The Economist. The latter even publishes a book explaining its own.
