Keyword Search Tools: +ve/-ve?

I'm just starting out in this direction and there is a fair amount of confusion. I'm hoping this forum will help clear it up.

For starters -
Is it a good idea to use keyword search tools such as [inventory.overture.com...]
expand on the keyword list?
or is this a dumb question?

All on-topic research is better than none. It will give you at least some ideas on the keywords actually used. Don´t take it as gospel but consider it one source of knowledge among others.

There a bunch of keyword tools around. Overture numbers are most relevant to overture and may not necessarily pan out for all other SE's. I would suggest wnadering around in Keyword Discussion [webmasterworld.com], there is a lot of info in there on selecting the right ones, places to find them, etc.
