Possibly a daft question: 000's of pages?

Delete me if this is too dumb to ask:

Over the weeks I've read loads of posts in threads here that say things like "I've added another 2000 pages to my site this month" - and I can't help wonder, how does one achieve such a content injection?

Are those kinds of big content additions the realm of bluechips and mega portals, really-really prolific writers (!), or through purchase and acquisition of other sites? Or..?
