Etomite Discontinued

I was starting to love this CMS Etomite, small and relatively easy to use. I guess open source has its bad side too.

The original developers are ending their support and development of Etomite and are developing a separate CMS not under the GPL. The developers do state in their forums that their new non-GPL'd CMS will allow users of Etomite to easily move from Etomite to the new system. They will also offer support Etomite 0.6 for an as-yet-undetermined time while current users migrate to new systems.

Although several developers have announced plans to fork the Etomite 0.6 code, I only know of two teams that are actively working on forking the code. Since the announcement was fairly recent, we may see more developers working on more forks.

I was also disappointed with the ending of Etomite 0.6, but I'm not sure how this is a bad side of free/open source software. With two forks currently in production, and more possible, it looks like the GPL is working exactly like it should.

To be honest I haven't been too impressed with any GPL CMS out there. Many times I wanted to pull my hair out when dealing with Mambo developers. Not because they are bad guys (they are actually really nice) but because development was snail slow and bug filled. (this is simply because they are working on it in their free time instead of getting paid to work on it 9-5)

I invested some money into a open source (but not GPL) CMS and it is turning out great.
