Hello,

I run a website on blue widgets aimed at the advanced widgeteer.
I'm developing a new site on red widgets aimed at beginner widgeteers.
On the blue site I have a tutorial on how to make widgets. I need a tutorial on how to make widgets on the red site.

I copied the tutorial content of the blue site to the red, I make some small adjustmens in the text and titels and add more text (because beginners need more explanation).

Is this a good idea or will I get penalised for duplicate content? Where's the line?

Is it a good idea to linke from the blue site to the red site to give me a start in Google or will this raise the duplicate content alarm flag even more?

Greetz,

Dirk.

Hi Dirk,

If there is adequate justification for sites on blue widgets and red widgets for the differing requirements, then it should be good reason to do it. If it's only to gain positioning within the search engines, then that is not the best reason.

There is no hard and fast rule on duplicate content as there are so many variables. Typically, I aim for about 33% difference.

Change the graphics, and if you change the site structure, too, that will help making the site look different.
