im making a piece of software how would i go by copyrighting it?

This largely depends on the country where you live. I don't know or its a very big piece of software, but best thing is just to compile or obvuscate it. Its much faster and cheaper and gives better protection as Copyright.

A federal registered copyright is only $30 USD. Go to [copyright.gov ] and most of your questions should be answered.
