Hey all,

I've got a tell-a-friend script on my website, on each page, so people can refer an interesting page to someone. I also say "This message may be read by an admin to prevent abuse" and I have the messages sent to me as well. I delete them promptly and don't store anyone's email or anything, I do it mainly to get some feedback about what people think of the site. It's been great so far.

Anyways, one just came in from someone who sent a page on my site to a person, and the message says something like "public exposure to intellectual property, maladjustments" and then gives a practicioner number and then a doman for a US government copyright/trademark database site.

It makes no sense to me. Everything on the site is original, except for a few pages that I used from the Governmnet of Canada website, and is used with their permission. (the site is Canadian, I'm in Canada, so why a US lawyer would be interested I don't know). The page this person referred was one such page I'm using from the Canadian gov website (again with permission).

So - I'm not particularly worried or anything, as I'm sure there's no problem. But could this be a lawyer scoping out my site or something?

Could be but I wouldn't worry about it.

I once had a comptitor accuse me of hacking their servers because I solicited a customer of theirs. I allegedly hacked the server to get the customers personal information. Actually, the name and email were on the web site in question. They sent a notarized letter which read like legalese but it wasn't from a lawyer.

To make a short story long, don't sweat it.
