What to do about users uploading (presumably) copyrighted images?

Hello. I have a new site that allows users to upload image to their section of it. In all likelihood many of the images they are uploading are not theirs. They do check off that they have read a disclaimer saying not to do this when they join. Am I liable in any way as the owner of the web site? Do I need to be proactive in removing these? That would be a real pain for sure. Any ideas? I see this kind of thing all the time on bigger sites like Tribe.

Thanks!

It may be better to ask a lawyer questions like this.

A lot of websites with user-uploaded or otherwise appropriated content have an announcement to the effect of, "If you are the original creator of copyrighted content on this site and would like it removed, contact the webmaster." While not bulletproof, I could see it equitably resolving 99% of cases without the copyright holder feeling the need to start with a lawyer.

Still, consult a lawyer if you are concerned.
