How do you guys deal with it?

The problem is of course that I have no issue with any or some user linking back to their site.

A spam sig is simply someone who got paid to post to go through sites and post on topic and have links to certain keywords - and they usually link to the same site twice. As a human it's quite easy to spot them.

I think I have decided to manually review the reported cases and just deal with it.

Our new signature rules might include:

No SEO keyword spamming.
No linking to 'download or share' sites.
No dupe linking, one link to remote site is enough.
If we 'suspect' someone from link spamming, we're free to edit their signature.

What do you guys think about this?

This is one of those areas where many opinions can be found.

I operate a number of forums. On all but ONE (1) sigs are NOT allowed. These do best as to user participation and on topic content. The one (1) where I do allow sigs has such low membership that I can't say yea or nay... though I do manually delete any post which is NOT on TOPIC (in my TOS) and so far, all of those not on topic messages have been spammers...

You'll have to make your own decision in that regard. Personally, I don't like sigs as few ever seem to advance the topic.

Linking, whether from sigs or posts/comments, is a different kettle of fish. If one has the time to check those out (and they are beneficial) then go for it... most of us don't have the time... I don't, for example.

it is a 50/50 situation for me, I think it helps make the profiles social and unique per user. And in return for posting if we let users link to their blog or site, without it being spam is fine, i prefer no links and all that, but maybe xenforo supports that better in the future with options. The other half of me oesn't want any signatures, due to the amount of abuse. It's a tough call.

For now I am just banning the user, leaving their posts there, and removing their signature.

So just report the post, and I will handle it for now.

- No linking until a minimum number of posts (20-100) is reached.
- Personal (non-commercial) sites only
- Limit 3 lines in signature
- one url only
