Facebook in Google

Aren't they enemies?

I just googled a fairly rare surname that most of you will never even have seen. I was rather surprised to see that 4 of the 5 top results were profile pages on Facebook. I had somehow got the impression that Facebook were systematically holding Google at arm's length.

What did I misunderstand?

The names on profiles are indexed from FaceBook, LinkedIn and many other SNS services. In order to actually see the profiles you need to log into the service and then have an appropriate relationship with said person (depending on their security settings).
