Looking for simple software to download to my own server to start a social networking site. I don't write code but my husband does but would like something that I would need minimal help from him. I've googled 'social networking software' and primarily found companies charging a monthly fee or companies with platforms. Any better suggestions?

A forum could be considered a form of social networking. There are many of them out there to choose from.
Many of the CMS portal packages out there can be used as the base for a social network.

In my opinion phpfox and buddyzone are two of the more popular ones. Both are written in php.
