Join some evening classes or groups such as yoga, get down your local pub once or twice a week, and don't forget your workmates are probably not all idiots.

More seriously; the problem with these scripts is that they are generally aimed at the low end of the market and unfortunately these very rarely take off. The scripts used by serious social networks (i.e. successful ones) are custom built and so you won't find them easily purchasable.

Facebook has released a lot of their code recently; it is possible you could get a team to build on that and produce something useful there.

If you don't need 100% control over your member base, consider a shared tool like Ning. They have a variety of tools and also make it easy for existing Ning members to join your network.

CMS programs like Drupal and Joomla, forum software like vBulletin and phpBB, etc. are all adding more social features (or others are developing mods/plugins to add those features). Deciding on a starting point of content, discussion, etc., might suggest one of these as an alternative.

You can also build a social network site through the use of ruby on rails
