Problem with mod_rewrite anti-hotlinking

It's not working

A mutual friend <snip> suggested I speak to you regarding mod_rewrite. I am the essential newbie when it comes to .htaccess and mod_rewrite, so I need a complete walkthrough.

My server is running windows nt web server, and I need to know how in the world to find out where the mod_rewrite is even installed on the system, so I can move forward in creating .ntaccess files for some of my directories. Ive been working with <snip> trying to stop direct image linking, and when we try a test page, the images still appear. We figure this is because of the mod_rewrite. Where do I look, how do I find out, what do I do? ALL help is greatly appreciated.

Are you running apache on the server?

Thats a good question. Its been so long since my 'installation of everything' phase, I dont remember everything I installed. Ill poke around and see if I can find any apache files or directories

I found an Apache folder under lib in my perl directory. There are only 1 or 2 files in it though, so Im guessing that I dont have it installed. Ill download the software and install it, but not until I hear back from you. I wouldnt want to lose anything Ive already setup

To use htaccess I believe you need apache running. You can load apache on windows. Hopefully someone more familar with apache is best to lead you through the install.

Since I run everything from home, do you know of anyone who could help walk me through an install either on the boards or through email or something?

If I wanted to get to where you want to be, I wouldn't start from where you are. Your task would be so much simpler if you could pay the relatively small cost of professional hosting on a Linux/Apache server.

First things first. Use this tool to find out what kind of server your site is hosted on: [webmasterworld.com...]

You should see "Apache" or at least "Apa" in the output if you're on Apache.

why would I want to pay for someone to host my site, when I have my own server and my site is over 1 gig already, with another 60+ to grow into?
