Zend Optimizer

Does it really improve performance?

I was wondering if anyone had experience, a before and after if you will, regarding the Zend Optimzer? We installed it on a previous server and it crashed our network. After we got it working, it didn't really seem to improve speed as promised. We're contemplating using a new script that requires Zend and I was wondering if anyone has had good experiences with Zend that justify the headache installing it on our new server? The alterative being crack the (purchased and licenced) code and send the Zend packing.

Thanks for the input. I read quite a few of those, it seems Zend remains somthing of an enigma. I really don't want to install it on my server if I can help it. I had loads of problems with it on another server and they (thankfully) offered a lot of support (costly however). Now I'm on a Godaddy private dedicated server and if problems arise, I'll be s@#* out of luck as Godaddy is useless. I think calling it an "optimizer" is cleaver bit of propganda, much better than its working title: the Zend ProblemCauser.

The isntallation came off without a hitch (I paid a professional to do it instead of letting the rank amateurs such as myself do it again). On my old servier it didn't, but ot does seem to have sped things up noticably on this server just for the record.
