Apache's Extra Modules

No need to upload .htaccess file on FTP again&again?

Hi,

While using mod_rewrite, each time we update the .htaccess file and upload it on the FTP server.
Is it possible we did not upload .htaccess file again & again on the FTP server instead of our local system.
I have listened that there are some extra Apache's modules with the help of installation of these, we can run .htaccess file on our system.
If any one knows, please help me.
