Anti Virus and Anti Spam via MX record

I have an account on a shared Apache Server running Linux.

The host uses Spam Assassin for A/V and A/S protection which I don't think is performing to a particularly high level for the 21st century.

Because it's a shared server I cannot use my own a/v software but I understand that I can use MX to send emails from all my clients (about 60) to an external supplier who will scan the emails and return them to my hosts mailserver after filtering.

As this is a new area for me I will be pleased to hear from other members about their experiences in this area and receive recommendations.

a MX record is used to map your domain's mail server to an IP address, it tells other mailservers around the world where to send emails addressed to your domain .... in much the same way as and A or C record maps your doamin name to an IP address.

i think you are prehaps misunderstanding what an MX record is.

although i imagine there are companies that you can send your emails to which will spam check them .... this may involve them asking you to set up your mx record in a certain way ... no doubt a company offering this service will have a guide telling you how to set it up.

a way to do this for free at the email address level (rather than the whole domain) would be to open a gmail account for each email address ... you can set up your emails so that they will go straight to gmail, you can then read the emails on the gmail website, or also set up gmail so that you can collect your emails from gmail either to a pop box or with an imap client.
