Experiencing problem with mod_rewrite

Trailing slash required, .htaccess, mod_rewrite

Hi,
I've recently changed my ISP, and have been successfully using the code below in my .htaccess file. In my ignorance I thought the same code should work on my new ISP, but I'm having problems where a trailing slash has to be added to the URL.

Working Example:
ie: [mydomain.com...]

Failing Example:
[mydomain.com...]
This produces a 404error.

What works and what doesn't work? How, specifically, does it fail? Do you get an error message or anything in your server error log?
