How to install apache web server on Mac Lion

I want to install an Apache web server on Mac Lion. I've tried many times and spent hundreds of hours on it but with a total lack of success. The essential problem seems to be that the people who write the instructions, always assume that the person trying to follow the instructions already knows a lot about the subject. I know nothing about it.

All I want the server for is to assemble, offline, web pages using server-side includes .

Don't just refer me to the usual sources.

Don't just refer me to the usual sources.

Does this mean you're prepared to spend hundreds more hours instead of just throwing in the towel and using the free version of MAMP?

At this point, Lion may be tricky, since they've spent the last couple years shoving 10.9 down everyone's throats. (I fell for it myself, to my everlasting regret.)

Thanks for reply. I tried MAMP a while ago and it didn't work.

That's odd. I've used it on both 10.6 and 10.9 with no issues. You do have to take a few extra steps if you want to support multiple sites on the free version.

You could try using the Apache webserver that is bundled with OSX:

On 10.7 and later it is not as simple as it used to be, but it can be done.

Thanks to everyone for their interest, but I was not really wanting to start a general discussion.

As I’m sure you’ll all have noticed, with most difficult operations in computing there’s one vital thing that you need to know, and that no sane person would ever guess. And that, of course, is the very thing that the computer boffins carefully omit to tell you, while telling you a thousand things that you don’t need to know, or that you could easily work out for yourself.

I was just wondering if anyone knew the ‘one vital thing’ about getting an Apache server going.

If not, it’s no problem: I’ll just go on checking pages with SSI online in a private folder, or else use some method other than SSI.

welcome to WebmasterWorld, ohnotagain!

total lack of success

if you want to avoid a "general discussion", perhaps you could tell us specifically what you tried and what the result was.
