Domain Mapping Questions

I'm hoping that I can get some help/feedback from someone here on how best to approach the following dilemma.

1. Want mysubdomain.mydomainname.com to show as url in browser window when externaldomain.com/subdirectory is visited


I have access to the host records for mysubdomain.mydomainname.com and can also access cpanel and/or the file system directly for my domain name.

2. The external site I do not have access to host records or file system, but there is a directory setup with content that I need to appear as if it were hosted on mysubdomain.mydomainname.com


I am dealing with a developer at the external site who says it is "too difficult" to do domain mapping


Can someone give me the different options that I can share with this outside developer to show him that it is not "too difficult" to do this, but simply requires a few entries in terms of domain mapping to accomplish this or let me know what workarounds I may have?


Can I set this up on my own in either cpanel and/or the host records or would it require that the developer where the content is hosted make some modifications on their end ie: like adding a dedicated ip or whatever needs to be done so that the domain mapping can occur?

the externaldomain.com server needs to be configured with a virtual host that will accept requests for mysubdomain.mydomainname.com and show the content in /subdirectory.
you need to configure your dns records to point to that server's IP address.
you also need to link internally to mysubdomain.mydomainname.com where appropriate.
on the external site's server, requests for externaldomain.com/subdirectory should be 301 redirected to the appropriate canonical path on the mysubdomain.mydomainname.com hostname.
