I set up a blogging site for a friend of mind and set about SEOing it. That all worked fine but now it seems to have attracted 1,000s of hits from casino and viagra sites everyday in the vain hope they are somehow going to show up in some kind of referrer link (that doesn't even exist).

I need to ban these scum as the site is on a reseller account and the option is to take the site down.

Any suggestions. By IP address, even top level domain would be fine e.g. .by or .ru or whatever. I really don't care about 0.00001% collateral damage!

Thanks in advance,
Chris

So, your main issue is comment spam, correct? Are the referrers coming from the same IP block? You can do the IP block and redirect via your HTAccess file per Jake Bailey's great presentation in New Orleans.

If it wasn't for all the time we spent to deal with spammers, all of our wallets would be thicker.

Sounds like there's a phrase somewhere on the page attracting these random spammers. I had this problem with a site that I used the Advanced Guestbook. I noticed in my log I was getting referrals from search engines for phrases like: "sign my guestbook" +comment.php

I just changed a few lines and the footer to something unique and banned a few of the spammer IP's. It helped me out alot.

I used the Advanced Guestbook

Comment Spam is still big on Guestbooks, although Google has been blocking it for more than a year with a filter. Smart move with making changes on the text on your site so you no longer come up.
