Using .htaccess for 301 redirection within a site

I need to redirect from one directory to another on a site. It's worked before with Redirect 301, but I've moved the site to a different host, and after trying every which way it's still getting an internal server error.

What's the correct way to do it (Linux/Apache)?

would a soft link work? ie from unix

using:

ln -s newdirectory olddirectory

this will create newdirectory which will be a soft link to olddirectory

I made the same error.
The folder redirect will only work IF the old folder and a standard (even if blank)html page are in place.

Thanks guys. Bumping this - still not working, still need help (and some sleep).

Both directories are in place on the server, none needs to be created and I have no idea how to use anything but Apache redirect, which apparently I don't know enough about. The one I want redirection from has a decent ranking that pulls traffic, which needs to be discarded for the new one because of how the directories are named.

It all worked on the previous server, not on this one. And there are a few places it's really necessary.

This thread helped me to understand the redirects within htaccess.

If your looking to do the redirects from within http config ( or what ever it is called?)when you have access to the servers apache?
Your going to need to look at redirects in apache.
