i updated apache using utterramblings repository as i normally do without issues. On this occasion, 2 days later at approximately the same times, the webservers i upgraded alerted with apache stopping. Started apache and this resolved the issue for now...
In the error logs of each server i have this logged:-
[Sun Mar 25 04:15:22 2012] [notice] SIGHUP received. Attempting to restart
httpd: Syntax error on line 135 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_negotiation.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_negotiation.so: undefined symbol: ap_set_accept_ranges

I'm hoping it doesn't occur again but can anyone shed any light as to why this occurred?

No clue.

Hard to diagnose a one-off fluke occurrence that isn't reproducible.
