Hello, I need some help with my htaccess file. I need to change some folders on my site like below:

Old - www.domain.com/aaa/bbb/ccc.php
New - www.domain.com/aaa/ccc.php

I've reviewed this thread [webmasterworld.com ] and am not sure if I need to do an internal or external rewrite.

These folders will be changing permanently. I want to do the best method to have Google pick up the new pages and lose the old ones.

If the files have moved from directory-path /aaa/bbb/ccc/ to /aaa/ccc/ and you wish to keep the old URLs and continue to use them after the files have been moved, then

RewriteRule ^aaa/bbb/ccc/(.*)$ /aaa/ccc/$1 [L]

will do that.

Move your access control rule above your domain canonicalization rule, and place this new rule above your WP code, which could also do with some improvements for performance:

This change prevents the disk from being checked twice for requested filetypes which we know that WP cannot or should not generate. If your site is busy, you will notice a performance improvement. Even if you don't notice an improvement, your hard drive will likely last a lot longer...

If, on the other hand, you have changed all links that used to point to /aaa/bbb/ccc/ so that they now point to /aaa/ccc/ and you wish to retain traffic from old links still out there on the web, then you need a different rule:

RewriteRule ^aaa/bbb/ccc(/(.*))?$ http://www.example.com/$2 [R=301,L]

This new rule must be placed before your domain canonicalization rule, in order to avoid stacked/chained multiple redirects should an old URL be requested from the "wrong" domain.

I plan to move the files from /aaa/bbb/ccc/ to /aaa/bbb/. I want to retain traffic on the web, but want those links on the web to redirect to the new location.

Will the code you posted cover that?

I plan to move the files from /aaa/bbb/ccc/ to /aaa/bbb/.

If that move is internal inside the server, and you want to retain the old URLs for that content then the rewrite posted above will do that.

If you want to change the URLs for that content, then the redirect posted above will do that.

It all hinges on whether you want new URLs or not. Rewrites and redirects are not at all the same thing.

Yes, I want new URLs. If the old ones are still indexed on Google, etc., I want them to forward to the new page.

In that case you need a redirect.

When the old URL is requested, the server will send a message back saying the content is at a new location.

The status code sent should be 301. The browser will then make a new HTTP request for that new URL.
