Mod rewrite language problem with localhost

I would like to map this urls:

mydomain.com/en/contacts --> contacts.php?language=en
mydomain.com/es/contacts --> contacts.php?language=es
mydomain.com/fr/things-to-do --> things-to-do.php?language=en

to test it I am using localhost this way:

[localhost...]

Please can you point me in:

1) Write the correct rules
2) Deal with localhost path to make rules work in both environments (www.mydomain.com and localhost)
