301 a domain without affecting subdomains

I've got a domain www.example.com that has multiple sub-domains, but those sub-domains are hosted away from were the www.example.com is hosted. If I do a 301 on the www.example.com will it also re-direct the sub-domains even though the sub-domains are hosted somewhere else?

The mechanism that invokes the redirect, if installed on the server for the main domain only, cannot affect the subdomains; requests for those subdomains will never reach this server.
