SSI Includes Stopped Working for php files

It seems that SSI includes has stopped working for php files on my server

I am getting this errot

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

I have the command there <!--#include virtual="/file.php" -->

This problem appears to be restricted. to .php files.

The include virtual command would work for .htm and .txt files e.g. <!--#include virtual="/file.htm" --> will work

I wonder if you have any idea on what it could be?

It worked before. It does not work now. What has changed since it worked?

If you are on a commercial host, you'd do well to ask them what "upgrades" or changes they have made since the date that your includes last worked.
