Hello,

I have a hosting in switzerland and last night I moved the files (zip files) of my joomla website with the kickstart.php file ) to my new hosting in the usa. Then I created the database on my new hosting and changed the DNS to my new hosting in the usa ( so far so good I guess )

I though my website was always be live with no down time... see that a copy of the website is still o my swiss server. what I noticed in switzerland the website has never been down but in the usa my website has been down for over 12 hours... and all i see when i connect with a united states IP address to www.mywebsite.com are the files

In France for ex it is has been down a few hours and then back online on its own.. without even me having to type my www.mywebsiteaddress.com/kickstart.php to install the site ...

I am wondering if it is normal that the site is live in some countries, down in some other , is it due to nameservers ( DNS ) propagation time ?

and also is it normal that I got an error message when I tried to install the site in France www.mywebsiteaddress.com/kickstart.php and that it installed everything on its own hours later ?

Thank you,

DNS can take several hours, sometimes more than a day, to kick over.

More importantly, anything added to the content at the old site after the new site went live will be lost forever.

I hope you turned off user comments on the old site before the new site went live.

When moving a site, I add a banner message to every page of the old site, a day or so before the new site goes live. The message explains the move, and says "the move is complete when you no longer see this message".

Make sure you add the ShowIP extension for Firefox to your browser so that you can easily see the IP address of the site you are visiting. That will show you which country you are connected to at any given moment.
