How to do it?

I have been reading around, and many people are saying that www.example.com and www.example.com/index.html are treated as two different pages. In order to avoid a duplicate content, I would therefore like to redirect the www.example.com/index to www.example.com/

I have searched the forum extensively, and have found no clear solution of how to do this.

Can any of the experts kindly help me out with what htaccess code will accomplish this?

Thanks.

See the first rule in message #5 of this thread [webmasterworld.com]. Be sure to include the RewriteCond that precedes the rule -- the two work together.
