I have single website which streams media (not located on the server) by using asx files to redirect to the location of the media on another server.
A few quick specs about the server and website...
Server Specs:
Dedicated
Dual Xeon 2.8HT
2 Gigs Ram
Hosted with The Planet
2 x 160G HD
Website Specs:
- 120,000 Average Page Views Per Day
- 9,000 Asx Files On Server Accessed 100,000+? time per day directly... Each ASX file is 1K in size
- Short 3 second intro movie which is hosted on our server is streamed 100,000+? times per day
- Website uses heavy javascript and Php to dynamically pull content onto the page
- Website has forum and blog hosted also.
Apache keeps going down ALL day long. Here are the latest stats I pulled from Apache when it was up.
Server uptime: 4 minutes 34 seconds
Total accesses: 5625 - Total Traffic: 102.2 MB
CPU Usage: u17.9 s2.97 cu.04 cs.03 - 7.64% CPU load
20.5 requests/sec - 382.0 kB/second - 18.6 kB/request
300 requests currently being processed, 0 idle servers
I am guessing since those 9,000+ asx files are being accessed sooo many times per day that it is killing Apache. Server Peak load yesterday was 290.
I paid $400 to upgrade the ram on my server from 1 Gig to 2 Gigs, and that apparantly did nothing. I am waiting for Apache to be optimized by The Planet. The Planet wants $1200 per month with a $500 setup fee to setup load balancing for me.
What are some recomendations for a site that uses up Apache soooo much that it keeps failing all day long? I only use about 5-6 Gigs per day in traffic, but with Apache failing, it's just killing my server and uptime levels which are almost at 0% with this account.
I was thinking of setting up that directory with all the asx files on another server to help ease the load. Load balancing for $1200 per month is just wee bit to much for me as of now. I'm sure there must be another alternative for high traffic websites to stay online.
Any help GREATLY appreciated!
