How and when to add 503 code

From last 4 days my server was overloaded and google keep sending traffic to my site and now when i think to update google removes my from its search and thrown me on 4 to 10 pages

After that i read on forums that i must use 503 codes for this issue

My question is should i have to add 503 code when server is overloaded or it should be their everytime even server is working fine

And will u plz explain how to add /use 503 code

503 is only used when overloaded.

Use 200 for serving normal content, 404 or 410 when the page is gone, and 301 when the user needs to make a new request for a new URL, or for the canonical URL, for that content.
