There should be a RewriteCond above this rule to make it conditional -- For example, testing for off-site referrers for use as an anti-hotlinking function.

The rule is poorly-coded, and could be rewritten a bit more efficiently as:

RewriteRule \.(jpe?g¦gif¦png¦bmp¦pdf)$ - [NC,F]
