Hi,

apologies in advance if this is an rtfm. Tried installing v.2.2.9 & v.2.2.4 on my XP Home PC, both with the same result. Only fix I have found posted is to use an exe version install file, but I can't find this at apache.org & unwilling even to search for this elsewhere!

Any help much appreciated - can write html & css but need to set up a local server to teach myself Joomla :-)

This is a problem with the Microsoft Installer, not Apache. By searching on the exact quoted error string in Google and Y! and poking around in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, you should be able to find something.

I'd run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility (from Microsoft downloads) as a first step.

Aha - Microsoft again! Thanks Jim, will come back when I've rooted around.

Just as I thought! I've done nothing since I posted this query, apart from a couple of re-boots......... tried installing Apache again, went in first time, but wouldn't start. Rebooted, started OK, got the 'It Works!' screen immediately....

Must have been yet another Microsoft 'undocumented feature'!

Now all I've got to do is install PHP, MySQL, & teach myself Joomla!

Thanks for your help, Jim!

cadoret - if you're really only interested in coding on a test Windows box then you might want to look at a WAMP or XAMP package which has Apache, MySql and PHP packaged.

Thanks, Billy - will Google that in the morning.... or should I say later today!

Downloaded WAMP from wampserver.com; now installed, working OK, and I've just downloaded my first template to test everything out.

Thanks again Jim & Billy. Seems my original problem was a Microsoft 'undocumented feature'... thanks to you guys I'm now back in my 'comfort zone!
