Does making .htaccess subdomain need my own server?

I use Apache shared hosting.
I want to make .htaccess subdomain using mod_rewrite.
But right now, all my subdomain depends on hosting control panel.

Someone told me that I have to make wildcard DNS.
To make subbdomain independent from controlpanel, I have to config httpd.conf by adding " ServerAlias *.domain.com " into the httpd.conf file.

Well, are there any way to make .htaccess subdomain on shared web hosting?
