How long do 301 redirects in htaccess need to stay in after a url change?

Until all of the search engines and all of the backlinks and direct visitors (bookmarks) to your site have made the switch. Could be a long time.

I'd say indefinitely - that is, pretty much forever. As long as the previous URL is available ANYWHERE on the web, some user agent may end up requesting it.

Ok thanks for the replies now I have to rework my htaccess a bit which I have no idea what I am doing. I have spent weeks having the incorrect 301 redirects in place and traffic and revenue is way down and the family feels it. I will try and repost some of the issue I am having but it's hard to explain when you don't even understand yourself:(

It depends what the redirect is in place to fix, but forever, or almost forever is the sort of timescale involved.

Starting to feel like this is marriage, lol! I take this .htaccess file as my 301 redirect file forever and it takes me:) I can now kiss my computers esc button.
