What is/does a cmf file?
for example I have one in etc/ that holds very confidential info as well as sql socket path.

in ftp it looks like a small pc icon?

If you're on any kind of shared hosting, then it may be a "Configuration Management File" or similar, put there by your hosting company to automatically 'manage' your account configuration (using a start-up script, for example).

This is likely done differently by different hosts, unless they have an off-the-shelf server management system.

No this is my own server
but related to your comments
I suppose it might be self generated when I create
a new account on my server.
(That server is where WebmasterWorld used to be hosted)
