Upgrade from 2.0.50 to 2.X.Y?

Taking Apache to a more current version...

I'm having a little trouble determining what the current preferred stable version of Apache is... 2.2?

That determined, what does upgrading Apache involve?

It isn't something I've done before, so I'm not sure how to go about it... how much reconfiguration will be needed... what it might break.

Our Apache version came with the Zend Core for i5OS distribution, so it installed with that package...

Thanks,

Frankly, I'd suggest you get Apache 2.2 working on a different machine, migrate your site over to it, test thoroughly for a few weeks, and then change the router to point to the new server it instead of the original.

If you don't have a compelling reason to switch, and you don't take that kind of step-by-step approach, then you may end up with your site offline and all of us saying, "Gee, sorry, we don't know what's wrong -- It sure looks like it should work." No telling what your boss will be saying...

In other words, switching server versions isn't something you should do just because "it's the latest model." Millions of sites are happily hosted on Apache 1.3.x...

There's a security release of Apache 2.0.59 that you might want to look into.

It seems like the worst problems are caused by incomplete uninstalls of the previous version and by a lack of intimate knowledge/understanding of the current server configuration. So I advise caution.
