I have been struggling with trying to edit my .htaccess file. I have Godaddy's Linux shared hosting and am using a Frontpage php ecommercetemplates.com template which the creators say doesn't require leaving the extensions on. However, every time I turn off the extensions my ranking/position in Yahoo falls from 75 to 757. I believe that the spiders cannot properly crawl my site without the extensions is why this is happening. Everytime I edit the .htaccess file and upload it to the server it kills the FP extensions. This is really big problem for me as Google doesn't currently have a single keyword in the 1000s for me and I have been out almost a year.

In order to use FP extensions, you will need to edit every .htaccess file in the URL-path and in your FrontPage folders to be sure that "Options +FollowSymLinks" precedes any use of mod_rewrite in each file. This problem was one of very long standing, and was finally resolved by chopin2256 and Bumpski, two of our members, in this thread [webmasterworld.com] (post #1496336).
