I wonder if someone experienced could point me to a book or website that really explains how to use mod-rewrite in practical detail, beginners level.

Not trying to blow you off, but you would be best advised to ask this in the Apache Forum [webmasterworld.com].

mod_rewrite is one of the biggest topics for discussion there.

For the record, mod_rewrite doesn't really have a "beginner's mode." It is pretty powerful, and pretty delicate. You'll need to practice a lot to get it, and then you'll constantly make very entertaining mistakes.
