How can i protect pictures with a password?

Hi there, you can see it on this page (right col : DAS BILD DES TAGES (pic of the day)) http://www.example.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=31453 . Must be done very simple. I emailed the webmaster of this site but he will not give me an answer, because i could be a spy who wants to hack his site. It is not only this pic, but all pics are protected with a password.

The large image is located in a protected section of this server, while the thumbnail is not.

Compare these two URL's:
