Hi,

I'm just a noob to linux and webservers so am totally lost with this error I keep getting.

The story is I have a vps from elcheapo host and unfortunately my low low cost doesn't include support, oh joy :)

Thing is it's been working fine until a few days ago.

I haven't been anywhere near the thing for a week! and medled with nothing.

Now when I try to add a new domain or subdomain it's giving me this message...
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apache/1.3.37 Server at www.mysubdomain.mysite. com Port 80
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I've been trying to read up and improve my server admin skills, but it's a big leap from html & css.

So far I've been told it could be modrewrite/corrupt filesystem/.htaccess problems, and some more things i just don't understand.

The existing sites and subdomains on there are all ok, it's only new ones that won't work. I've checked the error log (/var/log/?), but the last entry in there was from months ago, and I'm too scared to touch anything else in ssh in case I mess it up further.

The 'host' won't pick up the phone for anything less than $150 an hour, and that aint gonna happen. So I'm hoping my favourite experts can shed some light on this subject :)

This sounds like it might be a file permissions problem, but I'm not sure.

Any cPanel users in the house?

*bump*

As jimsays - I assumeyou are using something like cPanel to enter these domains and subs, can you confirmand give further info on what you are dojng to enter these domains and under what account?

A bit more info on the server and systems in place wouldhelp direct the advice ;)

Also, imho, look around for a better hosts, I can recommend the ones I use, but I think it may be against the forum rules - but have a look around as my VPS is very cheap and with full managed or unmanaged support depending ion if you wish to pay a bit extra or not pay ata ll - they offer trouble ticket support and reply back within 10 mins even at 3am in the morning..... change hosts ;) when you can.
