Redirecting URL with spaces

I am using Joomla!CMS with a special redirect feature that will allow each user to have their own url under my domain...and forwarded to their profile...
it automatically uses their username as the default url...or subfolder...

the problem is alot of my users have spaces or special characters in their usernames so their url's do not work since it also contains these spaces or characters...

this is how i have my .htaccess is set up...
how can i make it to accept special characters and spaces! THANKS!
