I have an apache server (Interland/web.com VPS Freedom Server) and use POP3 mail. I am being overwhelmed by spam, much of which is getting through via the resident aliases on the server that were there when I purchased it. They are as follows:

root - webmaster@(specified by me)
MAILER-DAEMON - postmaster
postmaster
bin
daemon
games
man
news
nobody
operator
pop
system
toor
usenet - news
uucp
xten
abuse
security
ftp
ftp-bugs - ftp
webmaster - webmaster@(specified by me)

Most of these point to 'root' (other than shown above)and I am gettinga lot via 'webmaster' and 'uucp'

My question is, can I delete or ban any of these to reduce the spam load and is 'webmaster' necessary if I am not using it for any specific purpose, i.e. I use a different email address for all my contact accounts etc.

Advise will be greatly appreciated as I am getting snowed under!

Regards

The only e-mail account that must exist is "postmaster" -- that's a legal requirement in many places. You can delete the rest, or possibly forward their messages to devnull@<yourdomain>.com, which discards them.
