Hi,
I currently have a shared server that allows me 20GB of disk space and 2TB of bandwidth monthly...now I realize that this is an incredible amount of traffic and I wont use it all up, but in anyones opinion, at what point is it time to get off of a shared server and get onto a dedicated server. Assume about 250k daily page views. I guess it's more of a concern about possible downtime due to other users mistakes. Any thougths would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

your hoster is speaking with a forked tongue ..the only people who offer 20gigs space and two terras bandwidth are the lying ..or the soon to be bankrupt if everyone on said server used the allocation ..

thats really for a different discussion...what i really want to know is at what traffic levels or levels of income (both monthly) do you need to consider getting off a shared server?

I think it depends on your site(s) and what you need. I'm guessing you don't have a technical need for a dedicated server or you would not be asking for reasons.

If you need to ask here to find reasons to upgrade, you may not need anything dedicated or the price tag that goes along with it.

Do you have reasons you think you should upgrade?

Personally for my current (low volume) projects, I am on a virtual server. $20/month. It currently does everything I need, and the price is right.

On the flip side, I am just now closing shop on a dedicated server that I required to host a site that's no longer viable. There were technical performance reasons I required a dedicated server for that.

Only problem I've had with the virtual server is that it couldn't handle a high "slashdotting" type event it got recently, although that could be solved with an upgrade of resources. Things like that are a technical reason to upgrade. If you're not running into reasons like that to upgrade, you may be fine with what you have.

well its not that i don't have technical reasons...i'm wondering what kind of resources a php web page uses up with large volumes of requests to a mysql db while additionally serving photos and eventually videos...will a huge upsurge in traffic shut down a shared server? this is the type of thing i am wondering about...thanks again!
